INDEX-S provides indexing services to authors and publishing agencies. Sole proprietor, Barbara Cuerden holds a Master's degree in Educational Research (2010) with a focus on society, culture and literacy, specializing in environmental literacy. Barbara is a member of the Indexing Society of Canada (ISC) and has served as the ISC Representative for the Eastern Region of Canada.
Since reading Elements of Indigenous Style (Gregory Younging, 2018) I’ve been learning about indexing practices that more clearly reflect the voices of Indigenous authors. Breathing fresh air into cultural dead ends, Indigenous voices are crucial to dismantling the ongoing abuses generated by colonialism. Indigenous contribution to conservation and environmental research in North America is essential.
To name a few of the resources that inspire me: Lee Maracle’s My Conversations with Canadians; Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass; Bob Joseph’s Indigenous Relations; Thomas King’s The Inconvenient Indian. I’m a big fan of Billy-Ray Belcourt, most lately, A Minor Chorus (2022). I continue to learn from Indigenous writing and research, working to align indexing practices with emerging voices.
